Treatment involves carefully injecting unwanted veins with Asclera® (polidocanol), an FDA-approved prescription medication. The treated veins close and gradually fade as the body absorbs them.

What Is Asclera® Sclerotherapy?

Asclera® sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment for uncomplicated spider and reticular veins in the legs. It targets the lining of the treated vein, causing it to close. Over time, the body absorbs the vein and blood flows through other healthy vessels.

Veins Asclera® Can Treat

Spider veins: Tiny red, blue, or purple vessels measuring 1 mm or less.
Reticular veins: Small blue or green veins measuring 1–3 mm.

Larger, bulging varicose veins or veins associated with pain, swelling, or skin changes may require evaluation by a vascular specialist before cosmetic treatment.

Asclera® should not be used in patients with a known allergy to polidocanol or acute thromboembolic disease. Cosmetic treatment is deferred during pregnancy. Some vein patterns may benefit from a combination of sclerotherapy and laser vein treatment.

What to Expect During Treatment and Results

Your appointment begins with an assessment of the treatment area and a review of your planned procedure.

Targeted veins are identified and the skin is prepared.
Small amounts of Asclera® are injected using a fine needle.
Compression is applied to the treated area.
You will be encouraged to walk for 15–20 minutes afterward.
Your provider will monitor you and review your home care instructions.

You may feel brief pinching or discomfort during the injections.

Treatment Series and Results

Treated veins fade gradually over the following weeks. Multiple sessions may be needed depending on the number and size of the veins, your response, and your goals.

Sclerotherapy treats existing veins but does not prevent new veins from developing. Follow-up or maintenance treatment may be recommended over time.

Recovery and Aftercare After Asclera®

Compression and walking are important parts of your recovery. Your provider will recommend the appropriate stocking strength, fit, and wear schedule.

Compression and Activity

General aftercare guidance includes:

Wearing compression for 2–3 days after spider vein treatment or 5–7 days after reticular vein treatment
Continuing daytime compression longer if your provider recommends it
Walking for approximately 15–20 minutes immediately after treatment and daily for the next few days
Avoiding heavy exercise, sunbathing, long flights, hot baths, hot tubs, and saunas for 2–3 days

Always follow your individualized instructions.

Possible Side Effects

Bruising, tenderness, swelling, discoloration, and small areas of trapped blood may occur. Some discoloration can take longer to fade.

Less common but serious risks include allergic reactions, blood clots, and skin injury. Your provider will explain the risks and symptoms that require prompt medical attention before treatment.
