Understanding Leg Vein Treatment

Spider veins are small vessels that appear near the skin’s surface, often forming red, blue, or purple patterns. Reticular veins are somewhat larger and may appear blue or green beneath the skin.

Laser treatment and sclerotherapy target selected unwanted vessels, which gradually fade as the body clears the treated veins. Your provider will determine whether cosmetic treatment is appropriate or whether a vascular evaluation is needed first.

How It Works

A 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser delivers targeted energy to selected vessels. The resulting heat treats the vein, allowing its appearance to gradually improve. Cutera’s Nd:YAG technology includes treatment applications for leg and spider veins.

When It May Be Recommended

Laser treatment may be an option for selected small, visible veins, particularly when an injection-free approach is preferred.

Your provider considers vein size, depth, color, and skin tone when selecting treatment settings.

What to Expect

You may feel brief heat or snapping sensations during treatment. Temporary redness, swelling, or tenderness can occur.

Asclera® Sclerotherapy

How It Works

Asclera® contains polidocanol, a prescription medication injected into selected veins. It damages the vessel lining, causing the treated vein to close and gradually be cleared by the body.

Veins It Can Treat

Asclera is approved for uncomplicated spider veins up to 1 mm and reticular veins measuring 1–3 mm in the legs.

What to Expect

Treatment involves a series of small injections. You may experience brief pinching, and temporary bruising, tenderness, or discoloration can occur afterward.

Compression stockings are part of aftercare. More than one session may be needed, depending on the number of veins and your response.

After Sclerotherapy

Wear compression stockings as directed. The recommended duration depends on the veins treated: Asclera’s prescribing information specifies 2–3 days for spider veins and 5–7 days for reticular veins, with longer daytime compression recommended for extensive treatment.

Your provider will also give you instructions for walking and when to resume strenuous exercise, heat exposure, and travel.
