What Is Limelight IPL?

Limelight IPL uses intense pulsed light to target pigment and small blood vessels that contribute to brown spots and redness. Unlike a laser that uses a single wavelength, IPL delivers a range of wavelengths through a specialized handpiece.

After treatment, targeted brown spots may temporarily darken before gradually shedding. Redness and visible vessels may also improve over a series of appointments.

What Can Limelight IPL Improve?

Sun Spots and Discoloration

Limelight IPL can help reduce the appearance of sun-related brown spots and freckles, creating a more even-looking complexion.

Facial Redness

Treatment may improve diffuse redness, including redness associated with rosacea. Your provider will assess whether IPL fits your broader skin management plan.

Visible Small Blood Vessels

IPL can target certain small, superficial vessels that contribute to facial redness.

Uneven Skin Tone

By addressing selected pigment and vascular concerns, a treatment series can improve overall skin clarity.

Your consultation helps us identify the cause of your discoloration and determine whether IPL is the right approach.

Is Limelight IPL Right for Your Skin?

Limelight IPL may be recommended for patients concerned with:

  • Sun-induced brown spots
  • Freckles and uneven tone
  • Persistent facial redness
  • Visible small capillaries
  • Other visible signs of sun damage

Skin Tone Matters

Under Saltbox’s treatment approach, Limelight IPL is generally recommended for Fitzpatrick skin types I–III, or lighter skin tones.

For deeper skin tones, our team may consider Laser Genesis 1064 for appropriate redness or texture concerns. It does not replace IPL for every pigmentation concern, so treatment selection depends on your goals.

Your Consultation

We review your skin tone, recent tanning or sun exposure, medications, and treatment history before recommending IPL. Certain pigmentation concerns require a different approach.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your appointment typically takes approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on the treatment area.

Your skin is cleansed, protective eyewear is provided, and a cooling gel may be applied. Your provider then delivers controlled pulses of light across the treatment area.

Most patients describe warmth and a brief snapping sensation with each pulse. Your provider monitors your comfort and skin response throughout treatment.

Immediately After Your Appointment

Temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling may occur. Brown spots can become darker and more noticeable before they begin to shed.

Your provider will explain the expected recovery and give you personalized aftercare instructions.

Your Treatment Series and Aftercare

Your provider may recommend 3–6 treatments spaced approximately 3–4 weeks apart, depending on your concerns and response.

Maintenance appointments may be considered every 6–12 months, with timing tailored to your skin and ongoing sun exposure.

Pigment Darkening and Flaking

Treated brown spots may develop a darker, “peppered” appearance before gradually flaking away. Your original treatment guidance estimates 3–7 days, although recovery can vary by treatment area and intensity.

Allow these spots to shed naturally. Avoid picking, scrubbing, or exfoliating them.

Protecting Your Results

Follow your individualized instructions for cleansing, moisturizing, and resuming active skincare products. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, limited sun exposure, and avoiding tanning are essential parts of your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Limelight IPL hurt?

Most patients describe a brief snapping sensation and warmth with each pulse. Sensitivity varies by treatment area and individual tolerance. Your provider will discuss comfort measures and monitor your skin throughout the appointment.

Why do brown spots look darker after IPL?

Targeted pigment can temporarily darken after treatment, creating a speckled or “peppered” appearance. These areas gradually shed as your skin renews. Let them flake away naturally and follow your provider’s aftercare instructions.

Is Limelight IPL suitable for deeper skin tones?

Under Saltbox’s treatment approach, Limelight IPL is generally recommended for lighter skin tones, typically Fitzpatrick types I–III. Deeper skin tones require a different assessment because of pigmentation risks. Your provider may discuss Laser Genesis 1064 or another approach, depending on the concern being treated.
